ABOUT PAPER SLEEVE

Paper Sleeve is a lot of things.

First and foremost, it is probably the smallest project studio and music imprint in the city of Pittsburgh. Secondly, it is the culmination of a lifelong passion for the creation, production, and dissemination of recorded music.

Paper Sleeve is a recording studio and independent label, with a strong focus on real music made by real human artists, who bravely approach their work with originality and intention. Some artists come here simply to record, mix, or produce a project through traditional a-la-carte studio services, and others become Paper Sleeve Creative Partners, working with the studio to develop, record, and release their music.

Our goal is simple: to help independent artists make meaningful records and connect them directly with fans.

My musical journey began at a very young age, singing in my dad’s choir. By the age of ten or so, I had my first electric guitar, and by the age of fifteen I had inherited my first recording rig: an old four-track tape deck and mixing console. From there, I began doing what any normal kid growing up in the 80s and 90s would do. I started writing and recording my own terrible music on this dated-for-the-time piece of gear, picking up used equipment whenever possible, and playing it into the dirt until it was unusable. I cobbled together amplification, learned to repair my own instruments, and eventually started playing in bands.

At the age of seventeen, I was convinced that it was my destiny to make a living from my barely developed musical talent, and, much to my mother’s dismay, I dropped out of high school. We can all probably imagine how that worked out.

Twenty-six years, a handful of odd jobs, and a successful career as a chef and restaurant owner later, I founded Paper Sleeve with a simple goal: helping visionary artists craft unforgettable recordings of their music.

While I know my way around many genres, I tend to gravitate toward styles that tip their hats to eras when creative moments were hard to capture, and all the more valuable because of it. Proto-punk, boom-bap, bebop jazz, post-rock, and other left-of-center sounds are good examples of my happy place.
